International Trade

Kentucky companies are quickly becoming competitive players in the global marketplace. Exports to foreign countries contributed over $17.2 billion to Kentucky's economy in 2006, ranking the state 8th nationally in exports per capita. This business activity supports 54,000 direct jobs in the Commonwealth.

The International Trade Division (ITD) within the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development recognizes the need to assist businesses with their international endeavors. The ITD in Frankfort provides export counseling, trade show, trade mission and catalogue show assistance, trade leads and information concerning licensing and customs. In addition, the Cabinet's foreign offices in Guadalajara, Mexico; Tokyo, Japan; and Beijing, China offer several services at no cost to Kentucky exporters.

While the largest dollar volume of international trade is done by larger companies, small businesses are also big in exports. Kentucky companies of all sizes and industries have been successful in expanding their products and services to the international market. The answer to success depends largely on product price, quality and service. But preparation and persistence are equally important.

For additional information or assistance, please contact the International Trade Division at 800-626-2930 or 502-564-7140.
